Independent testing validates R2Crete SCM performance against Australian and European standards

R2Crete SCM tested against AS 3582.4

Testing against European requirements

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) have long been used by the concrete industry to partially replace Portland cement, reducing reliance on clinker while providing important technical and environmental benefits.

In Australia, the AS 3582 series sets requirements for SCMs used in concrete. While established SCMs such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag are covered by AS 3582.1 and AS 3582.2 respectively, AS 3582.4 provides requirements for emerging manufactured SCMs, supporting the introduction of innovative material solution into the concrete industry.

R2Crete is developing a manufactured SCM recovered from waste concrete. Following extensive development and testing at university laboratory scale, the material was independently tested by a NATA-accredited laboratory against key requirements of AS 3582.4.

The results demonstrate that R2Crete SCM satisfies the tested AS 3582.4 requirements with substantial margins. In particular, the material achieved a strength index of 100%, compared with the minimum requirement of 75%, while its relative water requirement was 98%, below the maximum permitted value of 120%.

R2Crete SCM has also undergone independent testing in a European laboratory against requirements associated with EN 197-6 for cement containing recycled building materials, providing an additional assessment of the material against an international framework. Testing of cement incorporating R2Crete SCM as CEM II/B-F produced the following results:

The cement incorporating R2Crete SCM met the reported requirements across setting time, soundness and compressive strength. Notably, it achieved 28 MPa at two days and 60.5 MPa at 28 days, compared with the respective minimum requirements of 10 MPa and 42.5 MPa.
